I would describe my artistic practice as somewhere between research-based and the intuitive. My research is somewhat unconventional, as I forage from the pieces of my life and past to get a glimpse into my own psyche. My work stems from a deep longing to tell visual stories interconnected with remnants of childhood memory, imagination, and a yearning for healing. I’m influenced by the natural world, folklore, illustrations, and personal artifacts that I use to spur memory and emotional connections. I’m interested in the spaces where humans and other species have ancestral ties and ancient bonds. I’m investigating relationships, life, and death--all in a color palette that are chosen with my associations. Currently, I am making a series of oil paintings featuring rabbits surrounded and intertwined with garden flowers. The rabbits are a form of self-portraiture and a form of talismans that reflect vulnerability, yet are resilient in a directly response and counter to an increasingly hostile world by creating an idealized space where figures live their lives among beauty. Flowers decorate the animals, and the animals eulogize the flowers in a symbiotic relationship, yet contradictions, such as being hidden and being seen, are present. Where figures overlap, they create new affinities and kinships. The paintings are in the format of a vignette—small illustrations that entails a brief, evocative description—implying that the edges encompass a small snippet of time within the ethereal space and imagined narratives in a magical, folkloric construct. In these portraits, I am both a protector and one seeking protection.
